Julio julio@aexcap.com

Worked for the last 37 years for large and small pharmaceutical/biotechnology companies conducting and managing upstream, downstream and analytical efforts while developing innovative technologies. Provided for the last 29 years biopharmaceutical, biochemistry, bioprocessing and agricultural biotechnology courses and workshops at leading universities (Washington University STL, Northwestern University, Stanford University, UC Santa Cruz, UC Davis, UC Berkeley, UC San Diego) and international conferences (Quebec, London, Berlin, Barcelona, Singapore, Lisbon, Amsterdam, Dusseldorf, Mexico City, Merida, San Luis Potosi and Vienna).

Currently mentoring high school, undergraduate and graduate students at UCSD in the importance of biotechnology and bioprocessing in our society; Prepare submissions for technology discovery and development programs resulting in the approval of US FDA INDs/NDAs and US NSF SBIR/STTR and US DOE DARPA grants; Managed mammalian cell culture agreements and activities at CDMOs in the US and Europe to produce cell therapy products and biosimilar monoclonal antibodies at 200L perfusion and up to 2000L batch scale including regulatory submissions; Developed fungal, E.coli, Pichia and insect cell culture recombinant protein for discovery, development and commercial programs transferred to GMP clinical manufacturing from 1000L to 40,000 L ad CMOs in the US and Europe; Conducted technology transfer and IND/commercialization document preparation to CMOs of fungal and bacterial bioconversions for industrial, food, biocontrol agents, biotechnology-derived advanced materials, bioplastics, and clinical trials products; Worked with CDMOs to develop controlled drug release strategies for biopharmaceuticals

Managed laboratory for the production of Streptomyces-derived antibiotics at commercial bio manufacturing (fermentation) facility (12 bioreactors at 200,000L scale); Managed multiple site programs (Iowa, Texas, Washington, Arizona, California, Quebec, Spain, Finland) for the development and production of transgenic corn/barley/soy seed-derived collagen, gelatin and monoclonal antibodies for clinical use including IND & CMO management; Define bio refining strategies (corn, barley, alfalfa, sugar cane, brassica) for industrial protein production development; Managed technology effort of teams in Mumbai (strategy) and Goa (production) to implement low cost, high productivity, modular facility-based technology for the production of biosimilars focusing on monoclonal antibodies.

Lead a team of 16 engineers and biologists demonstrating technology for biomass deconstruction and the production of biofuels and biochemicals. Identified and developed a CDMO applying high expression systems (Pichia, Mammalian, E. coli) and single use technology.

BC Conferences, INFORMA, University of Mexico Workshop Leader 2004-present, Member of the organizer committee for Plant Made Pharmaceutical conferences in Quebec, Montreal and San Diego, Member of the scientific advisory committee for bioprocessing conferences in Lisbon (October 2005), Belgium (June 2003), Berlin (March 2005), and the Netherlands (January 2004) and the the agricultural biotechnology Unicrop, Finland.
